Hero Matatu Driver Awarded Ksh 1.4 Million After Unfair Dismissal
John Muthoni, a dedicated 14-seater matatu driver, has finally received justice after an act of integrity cost him his job.
In 2021, John made headlines across Kenya when he reported a group of students caught smoking bhang and drinking alcohol inside his matatu. Instead of ignoring the situation, he chose to do the right thing — he drove the students straight to the nearest police station and handed them over to the authorities. His brave decision was widely praised by the public as an example of honesty and responsibility in the matatu industry.
However, rather than being commended for his actions, John was unexpectedly dismissed by his employer, 2NK SACCO, shortly after the incident. Many Kenyans were shocked by the SACCO’s decision to fire him instead of supporting his stand for discipline and safety on the roads.

This week, justice has finally been served. A Senior Magistrate at the Nyeri High Court ruled that John Muthoni’s dismissal was unlawful and ordered 2NK SACCO to pay him Ksh 1.4 million in compensation. The SACCO has been given 45 days to settle the amount.
