Ruto Leads Latest Infotrak End-of-Year Poll on Preferred Presidential Candidates

President William Ruto would emerge as the most preferred presidential candidate if elections were held today, according to the latest end-of-year opinion poll by research firm Infotrak.

The survey, released on Sunday, December 28, shows that 28 per cent of Kenyans surveyed would vote to re-elect President Ruto, placing him at the top of the presidential preference rankings.

Matiang’i, Kalonzo Follow Closely

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i ranked second in the Infotrak poll with 13 per cent support, positioning him as President Ruto’s closest challenger in the survey.

He was followed closely by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who garnered 12 per cent.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino received 7 per cent, while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua polled at 5 per cent.

Meanwhile, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua and former Chief Justice David Maraga were tied at 2 per cent each, highlighting a crowded field with fragmented support.

Large Number of Undecided Voters

Despite the rankings, the poll reveals that a significant portion of the electorate remains undecided.

According to Infotrak:

• 25 per cent of respondents had not settled on a preferred presidential candidate
• 4 per cent declined to disclose their choice

This means nearly three in every ten voters are yet to make a decision — a factor that could significantly influence the outcome of the 2027 presidential race.

Public Opinion on Political Formations

Beyond individual candidates, the survey also measured public alignment with major political formations.

• 32 per cent of respondents said they feel closest to the broad-based government led by President Ruto
• 22 per cent aligned with the United Opposition coalition led by Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Eugene Wamalwa
• 17 per cent expressed preference for the Kenya Moja alliance, led by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, and MPs Babu Owino, Gathoni Wamuchomba, and Ndindi Nyoro

Notably, 29 per cent of respondents said they do not identify with any political formation, underscoring growing political disengagement among voters.

Party Popularity Rankings

In terms of political party affiliation, the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) emerged as the most preferred party at 23 per cent.

It was followed by:

• Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) at 19 per cent
• Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), recently unveiled by Rigathi Gachagua, at 6 per cent
• Jubilee Party at 5 per cent
• Wiper Patriotic Front at 4 per cent

The Infotrak poll was conducted between December 19 and 20, 2025, using a sample size of 1,000 respondents.

Participants were drawn from all 47 counties and across Kenya’s eight regions, making the findings nationally representative.
